From Coal Hill, this view looks down on the busy triangle where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio. The wood engraving was made from a drawing by Fred B. Schell and printed as an illustration in William B. Sipes's book on the Pennsylvania Railroad, which explains its attention to the rail lines and river traffic crowding the waterfront. Pittsburgh was growing fast as a center of iron, steel and coal in the 1870s, so the packed riverfront shows the city's industrial trade during that expansion.
