Few views of early twentieth-century Pittsburgh put the working river and the railroad this squarely in front of the skyline. Here the rail yards and coal barges fill the foreground, so the eye reads the city as a place of freight and fuel before it reaches the buildings beyond. In 1915 Pittsburgh was among the country's leading steel and coal centers, with the Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio rivers carrying much of that traffic. The panorama, dated July 2, 1915, captures that industrial economy at a moment when rail and river still moved most of the region's heavy goods.
