The title and signature mark this as a champions portrait, with "Rudolph '09" written in the lower right corner, and the image is dated to about October 8, 1909. That was the season the Pittsburgh Pirates won the National League pennant, and the team then faced the Detroit Tigers in the World Series that October. The photograph was taken by C. Rollins and registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why it carries a deposit number. The new Forbes Field, which opened that summer, was the team's home at the time, and images like this one helped fans follow a club that had just reached the top of the league.
