The Pittsburgh Base Ball Club's 1909 team stands out because it won the National League pennant that year, a title that carried the club to the World Series against the Detroit Tigers. Pittsburgh's roster was anchored by shortstop Honus Wagner, one of the era's best hitters, and the Pirates played in the steel city's rapidly growing ballpark district. The club went on to win the series in seven games, the first World Series title in franchise history. Note the "base ball" spelling in the caption, which was common in the period before the modern one-word form took hold.
