Jackie Robinson is the figure this illustration points to, and the newspaper that carried his image matters nearly as much as the man. The Pittsburgh Courier was one of the most widely read Black weeklies in the country, and in the 1940s its sports coverage pressed hard for an end to baseball's color line. Its national edition took that campaign to readers well beyond Pittsburgh, and Robinson's entry into the major leagues in 1947 became the milestone the paper had long argued for. This 1972 microfilm copy preserves period illustrations that show how the Courier presented the athletes and stories it championed.
