Robert Minor's drawing carries the title "Pittsburgh," but its subjects are deadly violence and labor unrest: the record links it to homicides and steel strikes in the city, with bayonets as the instrument of force. Minor drew for *The Masses*, the New York socialist monthly known for sharp political art, which federal authorities shut down during the First World War. Made in lithographic crayon and india ink, the picture reflects the long conflict between Pittsburgh's steel companies and their workers, a rivalry that had turned bloody at Homestead in 1892.
