A set of railroad bridges, smokestacks, and track lines, with reflections picked up in the water or on the surfaces around them, makes this view stand out from the city scenes on the board. It comes from W. Eugene Smith's photographic study of Pittsburgh, made in the mid-1950s, when the city's rivers, rail yards, and steel and manufacturing plants still defined its skyline and daily life. Smith's project aimed to show the city as its residents experienced it rather than as a set of postcard landmarks. Pay attention to how the rail lines and industrial stacks layer across the frame.
