This pair of prints stands out on the board for its mix of subjects: railroad bridges, tugboats, traffic signals, housing, and a bride, all gathered under one Pittsburgh heading. W. Eugene Smith made them around 1955 or 1956, during his long photographic study of the city, which he later titled *A City Experienced*. Smith approached Pittsburgh as a place to be lived in rather than a skyline to be admired, so the views move from industrial river life to streets and homes. Pittsburgh's rivers, rail lines, and steel-era economy shaped that daily life, which gives these images their context.
