Two prints in this group focus on the working edges of the city, where railroad tracks, bridges and yards meet barges and coal on the rivers. W. Eugene Smith made them around 1955 or 1956 while assembling his photographic interpretation of Pittsburgh, a project that aimed to show the city through sustained, close looking rather than a single postcard view. The mix of freight lines, river traffic and industrial plants reflects a place where rail, water and coal were still central to the economy. Worth noticing is how Smith uses those hard, repeated forms to suggest the daily rhythm of the people who depended on them.
