A blackboard in the drivers' room at a Greyhound garage in Pittsburgh is the particular focus here, with its warning written out for the crews who came through the room. In September 1943, the bus industry was under heavy strain. Gasoline and tire rationing had limited vehicles and maintenance, while wartime workers and service members crowded buses on routes between defense plants and home. Photographs like this one were made by the Office of War Information, whose Overseas Picture Division distributed images of American home-front life to audiences abroad.
