Printed in Aldershot, a long-standing garrison town in southern England, this lithograph announces that "vacancies exist" in His Majesty's Army, a blunt appeal in the style of wartime recruiting. The record dates it to between 1914 and 1918, a period when Britain relied first on volunteers and then, from 1916, on conscription to fill its ranks. Gale & Polden, the local firm that produced it, were well known for military printing, which helps explain the regimental-style look of the design. The poster is a useful reminder of how the army presented itself to men at home during the First World War.
