Rather than showing a ship or a sailor, this 1915 poster is all text, set beneath the royal arms and the monogram of George V and listing Royal Navy positions with the qualifying age and weekly pay for each. It was printed for His Majesty's Stationery Office by W.P. Griffith & Sons in London, one of many government recruiting notices from the First World War, when Britain relied on volunteers until conscription began in 1916. Its plain, tabular layout shows how the service presented itself to prospective recruits, with pay and age requirements given top billing.
