Unlike the recruiting posters that urge men to enlist, this lithograph was reprinted from the advertisement columns of *The Times* on Saturday, June 24, 1916, and it turns to the question of what happens after the fighting ends. Its title, "Help him back to civil life," asks the reader to help a returning man find work, and the appeal to "join to-day" was issued by the British Empire Union. The poster appeared a week before the Somme offensive began on July 1, 1916, when Britain was already facing mounting casualties and planning for the return of millions of men to the civilian economy.
