Few recruiting posters from the First World War put the uniform at the center as directly as this color lithograph for His Majesty's Coldstream Guards does. The Coldstream is one of the oldest regiments in the British Army, raised in 1650, and its guardsmen were a familiar sight on London ceremonial duty, which made their distinctive dress a strong recruiting image. Designed by Ernest Ibbetson, the poster reflects wartime efforts to attract volunteers in Britain during the years when the army depended on voluntary enlistment. A German archive of contemporary history once held the sheet, a reminder of how widely British wartime posters were collected abroad.
