A cable from General John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in France, supplies the text of this 1917 poster, which asks workers at home to support the troops overseas by building ships. The United States Shipping Board's Emergency Fleet Corporation issued it through its publications section in Philadelphia, reflecting the urgent need for cargo and troop vessels once the country entered the war that spring. The signature in the title credits an artist named Oberhardt. Its bold color halftone and direct quotation show how wartime propaganda tied industrial labor to the fighting front.
