Haines Falls, a cascade in the Catskill Mountains of New York, is the subject of this view, and its glass negative is one of the many scenic records the Detroit Publishing Company made of American resorts and natural sights. The Catskills drew summer visitors from New York City and beyond by the late nineteenth century, and hotels, boarding houses, and rail lines built up the area around such waterfalls. The company sold views like this one as souvenirs and promotional images, which is why its scenes often show well-kept paths and overlooks made for tourists.
