This glass negative records a painter's studio tucked into the Catskill landscape near Palenville, with a river and bridge in view, which places the building within the Kaaterskill Clove. The subject is George Henry Hall (1825-1913), a painter whose career was closely tied to the Catskills and the wider Hudson River tradition of landscape art. Photographs like this one, made for the Detroit Publishing Company between about 1895 and 1910, were often sold as souvenir views of resort-era destinations. Such views help show how artists' retreats in the mountains were documented for visitors and admirers at the turn of the century.
