Trout fishing is the subject here, set against the wooded ridges of the Catskill Mountains in New York, a region that drew anglers and summer visitors from New York City by the late 1800s. The picture survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a format photographers used widely before roll film became common. It was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled the country between the 1890s and the 1910s and sold their views as scenic souvenirs and travel illustrations. The image is a useful record of how leisure and recreation were pictured in the Catskills during that period.
