Guests at the Hotel Kaaterskill spent much of their summer on its long piazza, a broad veranda where rows of chairs faced the surrounding mountain views. The hotel stood in the Catskills during the era when well-to-do New York families escaped the city heat by train, and resorts like this one were built to host them in lavish style. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country to document such places, and this glass negative, made in the early 1900s, preserves the leisure of a grand summer hotel. The building burned in 1924, so the view now records a resort that no longer exists.
