The picture isolates the right wing of the Hotel Kaaterskill, one section of a sprawling resort in the Catskill Mountains of New York. The hotel was among the largest and most fashionable summer destinations in the region, drawing vacationers who arrived by rail to escape the heat of the city. The Detroit Publishing Company made many views like this one around 1900 to 1905, photographing resorts, railroads and scenic sites for promotion and sale. The emphasis on a single wing shows how big the building had grown, with its many additions spreading out across the hillside.
