Among the Catskill resort views in the Detroit Publishing Company collection, this one shows the annex of the Hotel Kaaterskill, a large summer hotel that drew guests to the mountains of southeastern New York in the decades after the Civil War. The Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this as postcards and souvenir books, letting people far away see fashionable resorts they might never visit. The glass negative, made roughly between 1900 and 1905, cracked through its center, and that fracture still runs across the plate, a reminder of how fragile the glass originals were.
