A winding garden path at the Hotel Kaaterskill, with children in the frame, sets this view apart from the broader hotel exteriors on the board. The hotel was one of the largest resorts in the Catskill Mountains of New York, where summer guests arrived by rail to escape the heat of the city. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative sometime between about 1895 and 1910, produced views like this to promote such resorts and the railroads that carried visitors to them. Scenes of grounds and leisure show how guests spent their days away from home, and the children hint at the family trade these hotels courted.
