The view from the Catskill Mountain House, a hotel perched on a ledge of the Catskills above the Hudson, is the subject here, and it was one of the most famous outlooks in nineteenth-century America. Guests who came up the mountain by carriage and later by rail looked east across the valley toward the river and the distant Berkshire and Green Mountains. This glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which between about 1895 and 1910 produced a large catalog of American scenery, and it was printed for sale to travelers and tourists. Its large 8 by 10 inch format gave the photographer fine detail in the layered ridges and valley haze.
