This photograph is catalogued as a view of the Hudson River crossing on the Catskill Aqueduct, though the caption card carries a question mark after "construction," so the exact work shown is not confirmed. New York City built the Catskill system in the early twentieth century to carry water roughly 120 miles from the Catskill Mountains to the city's growing population. Where the aqueduct passed under the Hudson, engineers bored a deep tunnel beneath the riverbed, a feat that drew wide press attention at the time. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs, and it is worth noticing the tunnel-building, civil engineering, and water-supply themes the cataloguers recorded.
