Men pose on a rock ledge above the Catskill Mountains in this photograph, which the caption card identifies as a boulder on South Mountain and dates to about 1902. The picture was made by A. Loeffler, a photographer whose name appears on the card, and the record notes that its details have not been verified, so the exact location and date should be treated as provisional. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the Catskills drew growing numbers of city visitors who came by rail to hike, camp, and take in the views from high outcrops like this one. Scenes of sitters perched on boulders were a popular way to show that rugged landscape was within reach of ordinary travelers.
