The title places this stereograph on South Mountain in the Catskills, but the catalog ties its subject to Lookout Mountain in Tennessee, so the exact site is uncertain. Either way, the card shows trees on a mountain ridge and dates to 1861, the year the Civil War began. Lookout Mountain later became a prize in the fighting around Chattanooga in 1863, which gives the scene a weight its maker could not have foreseen. The print is probably the work of James Hunter, an amateur photographer whose cards are held in the Charles F. Himes collection.
