Silver Cascade, the waterfall named on this card, lies in one of the narrow ravines, or cloves, that cut into the Catskill Mountains of New York. The card dates to 1861, when stereographs were popular parlor entertainment: two nearly identical exposures mounted side by side, which a viewer's stereoscope fused into one image with depth. The maker is probably James Hunter, an amateur photographer whose work survives in the Charles F. Himes collection, and the albumen print shows the soft tonal range that wet-plate negatives gave to landscapes of the period.
