Titled for the Catskill Mountain House, the hillside resort above the Hudson Valley, this 1861 stereograph is also tagged in its catalog with subjects about wartime damage and ruined houses in Charleston, South Carolina, so the title and tags point in different directions. The hotel, opened in 1823 by the Beach brothers, drew Hudson River School painters and wealthy summer travelers. The card was made to be viewed through a stereoscope, where its two nearly identical halves merged into a single three-dimensional scene. Its maker is probably James Hunter, though that attribution is not certain.
