Few French war loan posters of 1918 are as openly martial as this one, which urges readers toward "the supreme effort" in the war's final year. It was issued under the name of the Société Générale, one of the banks that took subscriptions to the national loan, and it is signed by the artist M. Falter. Posters like this were pasted across French towns to persuade ordinary citizens that buying bonds was a patriotic duty as much as a financial one. The soldiers and eagle listed among its subjects show how imagery of sacrifice and national strength was pressed into that cause.
