A plowman works the earth beside rows of crosses, a pairing that gives the poster its message: the soil of France, scarred by the war, was being brought back under cultivation. Abel Faivre, a well-known French caricaturist and poster designer, made the image for the Crédit Lyonnais bank to promote the 1920 National Loan, a government bond drive meant to help fund postwar reconstruction. Posters like this one used the countryside as a symbol of national recovery, asking citizens to invest in the country's future as they had once supported its defense.
