Printed in color as a lithograph measuring about 120 by 80 centimeters, this poster carries the call "On y souscrit" (Subscribe here) and is signed by the artist A. Galland. Its crowd subject reflects the government's appeal to ordinary people rather than to financiers. After the First World War, France carried heavy debts and faced the cost of rebuilding its devastated northern and eastern regions, so state loans like the 1920 National Loan were an important way to raise money from households. Posters such as this one were displayed in public places to present buying bonds as a patriotic duty.
