This 1920 color lithograph by Abel Faivre sets a farmer at the plough beside rows of grave crosses, a pairing that makes its appeal immediately clear. It was issued under the name of the Crédit Lyonnais, the bank that handled subscriptions to the National Loan of 1920, which helped fund France's reconstruction after the First World War. The title, *Terre de France* ("French soil"), ties the bond drive to the devastated land of the north and east, suggesting that buying bonds was a way for ordinary citizens to help restore it. Faivre was a prominent illustrator whose work regularly appeared in the French press, and this poster shows how memories of wartime loss were woven into postwar economic appeals.
