Rather than the usual battle scene, this poster pairs an eagle with the French tricolor and a sword or dagger, a set of symbols that casts the loan as a weapon in the fight against Germany. It was issued by the Crédit Lyonnais, one of France's largest banks, to urge the public to subscribe to the Fourth National Loan in 1918, one of the government bond drives that paid for the war. The poster is signed by Abel Faivre, a caricaturist whose sharp, satirical style shaped many French wartime posters. Its color lithograph format made it cheap to reproduce in quantity for display across the country.
