In 1920 the French government ran a national bond drive, the Emprunt National, that asked ordinary citizens to lend money to the state. France emerged from the war with heavy debts and devastated northern and eastern regions that needed rebuilding, and loans like this one were a major way to pay for that work. Posters for these campaigns often recast wartime sacrifice as a duty to invest in the nation's recovery.
