Few wartime and postwar appeals were as direct as the one on this 1920 poster, which asks ordinary people to lend money to the state. Issued under the name of the Compagnie Algérienne, it promotes subscription to a French national loan, one of several bond drives France used to fund reconstruction and manage the enormous debt left by the war. Posters like this were displayed widely to persuade shopkeepers, farmers and workers that buying government bonds was a patriotic duty. The design turns a financial transaction into an appeal to national pride, a tone common in French publicity of the period.
