Printed in 1918 for the Banque Industrielle de Chine, this lithograph urges buyers to subscribe to France's fourth National Loan, one of the large government bond drives that paid for the war. Its subject headings point to a design that ties investment to military victory, with French triumph over German soldiers and a stress on gold, the metal that stood behind national credit. Such posters were pasted on city walls and in banks to turn patriotic feeling into savings. Wartime loans like this one were among the main ways France raised money as its debt grew through the final year of the war.
