Louisville, Kentucky, in 1921 was a river city on the Ohio whose commerce rested on tobacco, rail freight, and the whiskey trade, though national Prohibition, in force since 1920, had shut down legal distilling. Churchill Downs, the track on the city's south side that opened in 1875, staged the Kentucky Derby each spring, and by the early 1920s the race was a fixed fixture of the local calendar. This view shows the grandstand and track during a period when the Derby was becoming the center of the city's public life and of the Southern racing season. For Louisville residents, the track was a civic institution as much as a sporting venue, and the Derby marked the arrival of spring in a city still shaped by river trade and by the horse farms of the Bluegrass beyond.
