Valdez, Alaska, in 1902 was a rough supply town on Prince William Sound, shaped by the gold rushes that began in 1898. Prospectors heading inland used it as the starting point for the Valdez Glacier trail toward the Copper River country and the Interior, so its streets were lined with outfitters, freight yards, and saloons that catered to men with pack animals and heavy loads. Its fortunes rose and fell with the mining boom, and many residents expected the trail traffic to keep the town busy for years. Few of them could have foreseen that the harbor would become better known a century later for the 1964 earthquake, which forced the community to rebuild on a new site.
