Eugene N. Foss, a Boston clothing manufacturer who turned to politics, sat for this portrait at Notmann Studios, a Boston photographic firm. The glass negative is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s into the 1920s. The record dates the negative to 1910, the year Foss ran for governor of Massachusetts, so the image may have been made for press use during that campaign. The record's title and date come from the Bain negative or caption cards and have not been independently verified.
