This glass negative is labeled with the name Boston Corbett, the man later known for shooting John Wilkes Booth in 1865. The 1860 date falls before Corbett's Civil War service, however, and the title comes from the negative sleeve and remains unverified. The Boston photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made the plate using the wet collodion process, which dominated studio portraiture in the 1850s and 1860s. Its place in the Library of Congress Civil War glass negative collection shows how such plates were later gathered and catalogued around the war's history.
