This negative is catalogued under the name of Sgt. Boston Corbett, the Union soldier best known for shooting John Wilkes Booth at a Virginia farm in April 1865, although the record's 1860 date and the title itself come from unverified notes on the negative sleeve. The plate was made by the wet collodion process, which was common in the 1860s, and the photographer, David B. Woodbury, ran a studio in Washington. Because Corbett's fame came only after the war began, the pencil note "Boston Corbet" and the scratched number on the emulsion are worth examining as clues to how the plate was labeled and filed.
