Jerusalem, as this hand-colored lithograph names it, is one of the few cities that appears in Currier's output as a place of sacred memory rather than a current event. Nathaniel Currier published it in New York around 1846, when his firm was producing inexpensive, colorful prints for a broad middle-class market. American churchgoers of that era knew the city from scripture, and the 1840s brought a wave of Holy Land travel books and illustrated views, including David Roberts' lithographs of the region. The print's catalog number, 3463, places it among the firm's many religious subjects, which were often hung in parlors and family Bibles alike.
