The title names Jerusalem, the ancient city central to both Jewish and Christian scripture and to the religious imagination of nineteenth-century American readers. Nathaniel Currier issued this hand-colored lithograph in New York around 1846, when his firm sold inexpensive prints to a broad public, many of them on biblical and devotional themes. The catalog record gives no further detail about the scene, so the picture is best understood within that tradition of images that brought distant holy places into American homes and Sunday schools.
