Baltimore in 1903 was a city of roughly half a million people, and its harbor, piers, and freight yards remained the center of its working life. Clothing manufacturing, tobacco processing, and canning had grown large enough that many residents earned wages in factories and loft buildings rather than on the docks. Down the Patapsco at Sparrows Point, the Maryland Steel Company's works, opened in 1890, employed large numbers of men and shipped steel plate and rails from a plant that was changing the shoreline. Residents of that year would have known Baltimore as a manufacturing and shipping port, a city of electric streetcars and church spires, and a place whose industries were beginning to outpace its older trades.
