This line illustration was printed in John Esten Cooke's 1899 biography *Robert E. Lee*, where it appears on page 244, and it is a photomechanical reproduction rather than an original photograph. Its subject is the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia, fought in May 1863, when Robert E. Lee divided his smaller Army of Northern Virginia and won a costly victory over a much larger Union force. Cooke had served in the Confederate army, and his book is an admiring account of his commander, which helps explain the heroic emphasis of the illustrations.
