Few images from the early 1850s show the arrival of American sailors through Japanese eyes as directly as this woodcut. It records a moment from Commodore Matthew Perry's expedition, which anchored in Edo Bay in 1853 and returned in 1854 to press for a treaty opening Japanese ports to American trade. The print is credited to Kanagaki Robun, a writer and illustrator of the period, and its subject is ordinary and a little comic: crewmen sitting down to drink, a scene that drew great curiosity from Japanese viewers who had little contact with foreigners. Printed in color, it is a useful record of how the visitors were seen by the people they encountered.
