This print shows a building at 14th and G Streets in Washington, D.C., identified in its record as the former stable of Thomas Jefferson. The photograph was made of a painting rather than the building itself, so it records how the structure looked to an artist, not necessarily how it looked to a camera. The National Photo Company, which produced many views of the city in the early 1900s, made it between 1909 and 1932, a period when Washington's surviving links to its early years were drawing growing interest. Such images helped preserve the memory of early federal sites that were otherwise disappearing.
