Few portraits of Thomas Jefferson carry a title that describes him as "a philosopher, a patriot, and a friend," and this one credits the drawing to his friend Tadeusz Kosciuszko, the Polish-Lithuanian officer who fought for the American cause during the Revolution. The print was engraved by a Sokolnicki, identified in the record only as "Ml.," and issued as a color aquatint sometime between 1800 and 1816, when Jefferson was rising to national prominence. The French inscription points to European circulation, where American political figures were often shown as enlightened republican heroes. Its emphasis on friendship reflects the bond between the two men, which dated to Kosciuszko's years in America.
