Jefferson sits with a rough draft of the Declaration of Independence and reads it aloud to Benjamin Franklin, a moment of the 1776 collaboration that the picture makes its focus. It is a halftone reproduction of a painting by Clyde Deland, printed in *Harper's Weekly* in 1897, when the halftone process had made illustrated magazines common. Deland's scene reflects the familiar account of Franklin and others revising Jefferson's text, but the meeting it depicts is the painter's imagined version rather than a documented event.
