Two Marines stand guard beside the bronze figure of Thomas Jefferson in this April 1943 view, taken during the dedication of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington. The dedication marked the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth and took place in the middle of World War II, which explains the uniformed guard at a ceremony otherwise devoted to the author of the Declaration of Independence. The standing bronze statue, by sculptor Rudulph Evans, rises beneath the memorial's dome, and the photograph shows how the capital still gave public honors to its founders during the war.
